The Polygon Foundation

Mission

First, to create a place for photography art and artists

A gallery, event space, print studio, teaching workshop. To connect artists, patrons, and a larger community. To share material resources and network effects.

Then, to expand this thing into the next thing, including more than just photographers.

Vision

A place where people create better futures across disciplines

Imagine an artist community, a think tank, and a research center in the same building (a former school or similar). People in all of those fields working alongside each other imagining and creating different futures together. Cross pollination and inspiration. Liberal Arts and STEM and R&D.

Photographers, physicists, authors, astronomers, musicians, makers, mathematicians, designers, developers, fashionistas, climatologists …imaginative optimists.

Inspiration

The great big vision is Inspired by prior initiatives: The Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, Bell Labs, Xerox PARC, ARPA, et al.

But imagine them in the same building together, working in a culture of open collaboration and participation. Lunch time conversations between a painter, mathematician, and poet. A chaos physicist and photographer watching a sunset. A novelist and astronomer co-authoring a paper.

Location

Portland, Oregon… at first

The big dream is Polygons around the world. A polyhedra network. Polygon LA, Polygon Maui, Lawerence, Brisbane, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Geneva, Cairo…

Required resources

A place and patronage

A building to use, for now. A building to own, eventually. Patrons of the arts, financial support. Operating costs, project productions, people.
